Panthers vs. Challengers
March 22, 1997

L 18-3

It sure was exciting to play our first real game! Everyone who came to the game (and there were lots of parents in the stands) saw a lot of action.

I must introduce myself. I am "Velvet the Panther" -- some of you might call me a Beanie Baby. Today I saw my first softball game. It was the Panthers versus the Challengers. I root for the Panthers (of course).

Let me tell you about the game I saw today. It was a little rough in the batting department -- I understand the girls have been hitting pretty good in practice, but we didn't have a lot of hits today. Justina and Maudie both had some nice hits. Olivia had 2 hits.

We scored 3 runs in the first inning and held the Challengers to only 2 runs in the bottom of the first. We didn't score any runs after that, but there was a lot of good effort.

Then the Panthers started making some great defensive plays !! Rene snagged two grounders at first base and got outs! Later, Marissa got a forceout at 3rd base and then caught a line drive ! Lisa did a great job at getting the ball back into the pitcher's circle... Hmmm... I'm trying to remember all the super stuff I saw.

I remember all the outfielders doing a great job running down the ball and throwing it back to the pitcher. Oh yes, I remember Kristen making a wonderful tag play on the girl running from 2nd to 3rd! And then Marissa followed that up with a tag play on a girl running to second base!

Then in the last inning, Maudie saw her first action at first base. And what did she do? She got two forceouts in a row!! That along with her wonderful hitting made Maudie our Panther of the Day, and she got the game ball.

Coach Larry did a good job pitching. Then Coach Rodney did some pitching later in the game to try and stay sharp. Coach Rodney did throw good strikes, but he kept striking out our girls. I guess I need to have a talk with him...

I'll try to keep up with game updates all season long!!
